After a multi-year bureaucratic odyssey, Japanese barware shop Umami Mart finally got the green light to start selling beer and sake earlier this year.

Tonight, the store is celebrating its transformation into the first Japanese beer shop in the U.S. with a Bottle System Opening Party from 6 to 9 p.m. Open to the public, the party will feature food, music by DJ Chungtech … and non-alcoholic drinks (alas, Umami Mart’s license does not allow for open alcoholic containers on-site).

And yes, the food will include fried chicken courtesy of Aburaya.

Attendees can admire the unveiling of a reconfigured back area of the store designed (by Dane designer Anders Arhoj) in minimalist-modern style to better display the shop’s selection of around 50 jibiru Japanese craft beers and 30 sakes.

Umami Mart Bottle System Grand Opening Party: Tuesday, April 21, 6 p.m.–9 p.m.

Umami Mart: 815 Broadway, Oakland, (510) 250-9559, umamimart.com.
